31 Hour Fun Run

County Loop

Each year for the last few years around my birthday I run my age in miles.  This year I'm going to mix it up and run my age in  hours instead of miles.  Starting on 27April13 at 6Am I'm going to run Country Loop in Mount Zion. With a Saturday 6AM start time I'll finish at 1PM on Sunday.   This is just shy of 5 and a half miles.  I'll run this over and over again till I run out of time to finish a loop. At that point I'll finish off the time on the Mount Zion Track.  Any and all runners are welcome to join me for as much or as little as they want. Cyclists that are out are welcome to deviate from their normal routes and … [Read more...]

Overshare

The reason I came across the iSport headphones to begin with is cause of Pauline Nordin, who is Fighter Diet. She’s smokin’ hot, walks around stage ready and is a blast to follow on Facebook and Twitter. She’s sponsored by the iSport headphone.  I figured if someone of her caliber likes them, then I probably will too. I rarely remember my dreams when I sleep, maybe five times my entire life.  The other day I dreamed about going on a date with Pauline.  The only reason I’m sharing this here is I wanted to tell someone about this dream, but I don’t like to talk. If I were to tell this it would take way too long and go past my … [Read more...]

Music on my iPod I’m embarrassed is on there

This post is about all the crap on my iPod playlist that I turn the volume down if someone is near me just so they don't overhear what I'm listening to. Why am I doing this? I have to learn to accept me for me. These are all songs that I hoped no one would ever look at my iPod and see on there. I figure since I'm nervous to have people see it I should get over myself and publicly admit to it. I've learned long ago that if something scares you, it's probably what you need to do. I also believe everyone has songs like this, we all have guilty pleasures. Yes, I have metal, country, rock, jazz and all kinds of stuff, but here's what I'd rather … [Read more...]

Injured

Makes my calf look massive

Memorial Day weekend I was out on an easy trail run and I rolled my ankle. I rolled it bad enough that I fell face first right away. On the way down I had two thoughts; 1."Huh, I stepped on a stick, snapped it and am now falling" 2. (this is when the pain set in) "Crap, that wasn't a stick, that was my ankle". Those both happened before I even hit the ground. I laid there for a bit, eventually got up on both feet and hobbled back. It was only about a mile, nothing too bad. Several doctor visits, an MRI and some X-Rays later I have a full diagnosis. 3rd degree ankle sprain with a high ankle sprain in the right ankle. Basically I tore … [Read more...]

Train Hard, Taper Hard

I haven't posted anything in a bit. Frankly I've been really busy and it's come down to a choice of post something or get laundry done, post or get groceries, post or train. I'm hoping soon enough my time frees back up and I can post stuff more regularly. I've got some gear reviews to write as soon as I can get to them. I'm only posting tonight cause I went to bed and couldn't sleep. I know my writing is boring enough to put most to sleep, hopefully that works on me. My training is done at this point. Now it's time to taper and recover. Sleep, quality eating and active recovery are the keys. Normally I wouldn't skip training cause of … [Read more...]

Running Friends

I first wrote this post back in April of 2011. I'm putting it back up cause I've been reminded of it again through running with Kelly Fox and many other people recently. Running really has improved my life as well as my social skills. It gives someone socially awkward like me a way to be around others and slowly let them into my life. If you are wondering, nothing ever happened with the girl (story of my life). I did a 20 mile trail run today out at Rock Springs. I had one friend, Duffy Smith, join me for about 4 miles then he split off to run home. My friend Kelly Fox joined me for 16 miles of the run then had to get home to her kids. … [Read more...]

Military Post on Adventure Foot

Ground and Pound

My friend Laura Sievert who has posted on here before has her new blog up and rocking it. The other weekend while I was doing Military Training in her area I invited her along for a morning of some Boxing and MMA drills with my unit. We went to Legacy Martial Arts in Quincy, IL. She did a great write-up here on how it went for her. Read it with the link below as well as all her other stuff.   A Hat to be Proud of   … [Read more...]

The Distance of Truth

Distance of Truth

Hands down the best running documentary out there is the movie “The Distance of Truth”.  This movie follows Ferg Hawke in his pursuit to win the 2005 Badwater  Ultramarathon. Badwater is considered the toughest footrace on earth. It covers 135 miles of asphalt through Death Valley in June, running from the lowest point in the contiguous U.S. to the highest point in temps that at the lowest are around 100 degrees.  Some of the top ultra runners in the world have dropped this race. This movie interviews top competitors in the sport of ultra … [Read more...]

First Lego League

Not running related but it's my site so deal with it.   I did the First Lego League Food Factor Challenge this year with Stephen Decatur Middle School.  It's a program put on by Lego and locally it's sponsored by CAT.  Myself and a bunch of other engineers go into local middle schools and teach them robotics, programming, engineering, troubleshooting, teamwork, presentation skills... everything related to building a robot and presenting on it.  The whole thing is too complicated to explain but here are the missions that our kids got done. Sadly due to transportation issues we didn't compete.  The competition was held about an … [Read more...]

Night before the 24 Hour

I've had people ask me what my pre-race routine is, how I carb load, how I deal with the nervousness... all the things anyone who competes deals with.  Here's what I do, what I think and how things go.  I'm going to try to be super honest, admit fears and worries.  This isn't cause I'm on a compliment fishing trip, or I need external support. I'm good on all those accounts, I know my skill set and where I'm at with running.  I feel that the big draw for me with ultra running is how honest you have to be with yourself.  If you run long enough eventually you get stripped down and it bares your soul, you can't hide from yourself in this … [Read more...]
