31 Hour Fun Run

County Loop

Each year for the last few years around my birthday I run my age in miles.  This year I'm going to mix it up and run my age in  hours instead of miles.  Starting on 27April13 at 6Am I'm going to run Country Loop in Mount Zion. With a Saturday 6AM start time I'll finish at 1PM on Sunday.   This is just shy of 5 and a half miles.  I'll run this over and over again till I run out of time to finish a loop. At that point I'll finish off the time on the Mount Zion Track.  Any and all runners are welcome to join me for as much or as little as they want. Cyclists that are out are welcome to deviate from their normal routes and … [Read more...]

Train Hard, Taper Hard

I haven't posted anything in a bit. Frankly I've been really busy and it's come down to a choice of post something or get laundry done, post or get groceries, post or train. I'm hoping soon enough my time frees back up and I can post stuff more regularly. I've got some gear reviews to write as soon as I can get to them. I'm only posting tonight cause I went to bed and couldn't sleep. I know my writing is boring enough to put most to sleep, hopefully that works on me. My training is done at this point. Now it's time to taper and recover. Sleep, quality eating and active recovery are the keys. Normally I wouldn't skip training cause of … [Read more...]

200!

I don't look this pretty doing these

Thanks to a short notice for a PT Test with the Army I suddenly have to increase my skill at push ups instead of a slow gradual progression I was hoping for. 17 days notice instead of a few months before my next one. Granted I can ALWAYS pass a PT test, I wanted to destroy my next one. I worked out with my coaches (or they told me and I said sure) a crash training program. 14 days of 200 per day, each day getting harder and harder. Once this is over I'll go on a more sensible training program - till then I'm rocking 200 per day! Day 1 200 push-ups as 20 sets of 10 reps. You can split these any way you wish e.g. 20 x 10 with a short rest … [Read more...]

Love the Hills!

Recently I was running with a friend for the first time. I don’t mean it was the first time I had a friend to run with, I mean it was the first time I ran with this particular friend. Laura is fairly new to running and currently training for her first half marathon. Like most newbs she didn’t know how to run up hill so the hills were kicking her butt. I worked with her on our run and got her to the point where she wasn’t dreading hills. What follows will be some tips and pointers I’ve learned over the years about how to run up hills.   Hills are an important part of a training program. Hills are both speed work and strength … [Read more...]

Recovery Tips

Another runner asked me about recovering cause her legs were dead after her runs. Here's what I sent her. To some extent you are going to run on tired legs until race day. A large part of training is getting used to running/working out on tired legs. This gets you ready for the last leg of a race when you can't quite flush all the lactic acid out and you are getting tired. This is why the taper before a race is extremely important, heal up and be fully recovered for race day. Tips to help prevent this or deal with it: Hydration is very important. Water helps blood circulation and keeps your legs flushed out. To drink enough make sure … [Read more...]

Quality Vs. Quantity

I’ve enlisted the services of Ultra Running Coaches William Sichel and Shaun Brassfield-Thorpe (UltraFitnessTraining.com) to prepare myself for the McNaughton 200 mile trail race this May in VT. In an email discussion with these guys I posed the question about how many miles I should be running each week this far out from the race, and what the progression will look like as the weeks pass and race day approaches. I’ve always intellectually known that weekly mileage is a poor judge of fitness and training, but sometimes emotionally I forget this and use it as an easy benchmark to judge my training. I’ve described this to others in … [Read more...]

Speed Drills without the Track

I was recently asked about speed drills that can be done by a fellow runner that doesn't have access to a track. Here are some drills that can be done without a set distance like a traditional track work out requires. These all fall under the Fartlek (speed play) category. I intentionally leave off any distances, number of reps or pace. This is highly individualistic and should be figured out with a coach if you have one or through doing the speed drill the first time with the intent of learning how to do the drill, the next time start building. 30 Minute Drill This is a great fartlek. Pace yourself so you have enough left in the tank so … [Read more...]

Race Pace

Justin at the Illinois Marathon finish

My little brother Justin Busen steps up and shares his knowledge and ideas of pacing for race day. He's stupid fast on the run, a hit with the ladies and funnier then me... I hate him. -Jared   “My main problem is finding a pace in general that I can hold for mile after mile. I’m used to just running 2 miles all out and being done.” This question, more or less, is frequently asked if not thought about by every runner who toys with the idea of running a marathon, or any major distance for that matter…50, 150, 200, even 500 miles. In this article I will attempt to “break the ice” of the pace topic and how it relates … [Read more...]
