McNaughton 200 Mile

Some of the runners for the 200

This race report is proving difficult to write. It’s tough to write about a DNF, especially when so much of the race is a blur. This is probably more a collection of incoherent thoughts then anything else. I attempted to complete the McNaughton 200 Mile Trail run and fell short, way short. At mile 100 I dropped knowing I’d be unable to finish. This year the race actually had a 100% DNF rate. 10 of us started, 10 of us did not complete the distance. There was a 72 hour course cut off, when I reached the 100 mile point at 43 hours that left me 29 hours to run the second 100. I’m not capable of running a negative split like that. I took … [Read more...]

Brenda’s I-Challenge Report

Another friend of mine Brenda also ran in the I-Challenge this weekend. Here is her report. She has an epiphany that I believe all athletes should realize for themselves. Good lesson there. I've had the pleasure of working out with Brenda before. She has the attitude needed to succeed. She pushes hard, craves going beyond her comfort zone and loves every second of it. Read her "A little about me" for her full story. Brenda's report here … [Read more...]

Train Hard, Taper Hard

I haven't posted anything in a bit. Frankly I've been really busy and it's come down to a choice of post something or get laundry done, post or get groceries, post or train. I'm hoping soon enough my time frees back up and I can post stuff more regularly. I've got some gear reviews to write as soon as I can get to them. I'm only posting tonight cause I went to bed and couldn't sleep. I know my writing is boring enough to put most to sleep, hopefully that works on me. My training is done at this point. Now it's time to taper and recover. Sleep, quality eating and active recovery are the keys. Normally I wouldn't skip training cause of … [Read more...]

YMCA Turkey Trot 5k recap – Lydia Morris

Lydia and her sister

Lydia Morris writes about her first and second 5ks!  She does a great write up and captures all the joy that experienced runners (me included) have to enjoy through others cause we've lost it.  She also brings up an excellent topic that I completely believe in and have preached to many. Lydia takes up running, then to improve her running she gets healthier in all aspects of her life - diet, yoga, motivation... she ends up in an upward spiral that improves her life which improves her running which improves her life.... These are some of my favorite recaps to read.  Keep it up Lydia, you motivate me! -Jared … [Read more...]

Veteran’s Day Run – Sievert

vets-run-quincy-large-group

Laura talks about her longest race/run to date.  She also speaks to how great it is to be part of the local running community.  As usual I love keeping tabs on what Laura is up to, what she's accomplished and how her confidence in her athletic abilities keeps growing. -Jared The Inaugural Veteran’s Day Run was held last Friday, 11/11/11, at the Quincy Soldiers and Sailors Home.  The event was part of a larger national event that was organized to raise money for various military support groups including the Wounded Warrior Project.   In a sign-up period of only 3 weeks, the Quincy chapter of the Veteran’s Day 11K run or 1 Mile … [Read more...]

Howl At The Moon 8 Hour – Race Report, Neil Prisbe

Neil Prisbe ran his first ultra back in August.  It didn't go well for him, but hell I've only had maybe 2 of 15 ultras go well. This is a very hard sport to do, things go wrong all the time.  I love Neil's honesty and the stones it takes to be this candid about how he feels.  Big props Neil, enjoy some time off from racing and reconnect, find the love that brought you to this sport to begin with. -jared   August 13th, 2011 Well, I try not to write these anymore so this one took me a bit to get my experience and thoughts into words.  I think I can sum this up quickly by saying I am not an “ultra runner” like I had hoped … [Read more...]

Badgerland 24 Hour Track Ultra – 2011

Badgerland

September 3rd 2011 was the 24 Hour Badgerland Track Ultra.  This race takes place on a 400 meter track, log as many miles as you can in 24 hours.  My goal was to run 130 miles before the time elapsed. This was a big goal but one I know I'm capable of achieving.  Well, I fell way short of it. I didn't even run all 24 hours.  This won't be an in-depth recount cause when you run 369 laps around a 400 meter track, they all blur together.  Even had I wrote it right after the race, it still would all blur together.  My official distance is 91.731 miles.   My crew was Brandon and Betsy Barnes.  They both did a great job … [Read more...]

McNaughton Follow Up

mcnaughton

It's been a two weeks since the 150. Today was my first real run since this race. I got in 8 miles and it took a touch over an hour. I feel like it was a hard 20, but that's fine. My recovery skills are gonna take a bit to come back slowly but surely. I'm just happy to be able to move as well as I am. I swam yesterday and will be swimming again tomorrow. Thursday I'll get another run in, Fri another swim and next week I'll try to get one or two double work out days in. Last week I had a sports massage on my legs. That was super duper uncomfortable to say the least. The massage therapist took her elbows and dug into all the … [Read more...]

McNaughton 150 Mile Ultra Trail Run

Feature

May 6th 2011 was my 150 mile run.  On a high level if you don't feel like reading the super long post this is probably going to turn out to be I enjoyed it immensely.  I finished 1st overall, struggled at some points but dealt with it all as it came and kept knocking the miles down.  Official time is 50h09m54s. The trail is a 10 mile loop repeated 15 times with 2400 feet of elevation change per loop. This means that running 150 miles gets you 36,000 ft of elevation change.  The trail is set up for mountain biking and is a mixture of  old logging roads, single track, switchbacks, massive ascends and descends and everything … [Read more...]

Go! St. Louis Marathon

Thanks to a last minute cancellation of Army Reserves Drill this weekend I was able to go down to STL and register for the Go! St. Louis Marathon at the expo!  I went down hoping to be able to get in the full, at worst getting in the half. Both my main training partners were registered and have been training for the full. Thanks to them being wonderful people I tagged along with them and was able to sleep in a nice comfy hotel just a few blocks from the starting line. The course was really nice and had numerous rolling hills.  I'm a fan of hills and don't really like long flat runs, so this worked for me.  Today was supposed … [Read more...]
