31 Hour Fun Run

County Loop

Each year for the last few years around my birthday I run my age in miles.  This year I'm going to mix it up and run my age in  hours instead of miles.  Starting on 27April13 at 6Am I'm going to run Country Loop in Mount Zion. With a Saturday 6AM start time I'll finish at 1PM on Sunday.   This is just shy of 5 and a half miles.  I'll run this over and over again till I run out of time to finish a loop. At that point I'll finish off the time on the Mount Zion Track.  Any and all runners are welcome to join me for as much or as little as they want. Cyclists that are out are welcome to deviate from their normal routes and … [Read more...]

Petzl MYO PRX

MYO PRX

I’ve had the Petzl  MYO PRX for about 6 months now as my primary headlamp.  It’s a bit pricey but it’s worth it if you do a lot of night time trail running.  This thing throws enough light that when the trail is wide enough to run side by side my running partner (who forgets her headlamp more then not) can see as if she’s wearing the lamp herself and has no troubles tackling technical sections of trails at night. Specs: MSRP – $89.95 Power – 3 AAA batteries Waterproof Optional over the head third strap Programmable Boost mode for temporary extra light Lens to allow for flood or spot Water resistant Regulated … [Read more...]

Black Diamond Ultra Distance Z-Poles

Full and collapsed length

While running in the McNaughton 200 miler this year I noticed that all the other runners there had trekking poles.  Those that didn't start with them ended up using theirs by the end. I talked to a few of them about this cause it was really obvious that I was missing something.  In hind sight I wish that I had a pair with me, I'd have used them every step of the way.  The most common pole there was the Black Diamond Ultra Distance Z-pole.  As soon as I got home I ordered a pair and have been using them the last few months. Over all I love these poles and think they are perfect for trail running. My buddy and stud ultra runner Steve … [Read more...]

McNaughton 200 Mile

Some of the runners for the 200

This race report is proving difficult to write. It’s tough to write about a DNF, especially when so much of the race is a blur. This is probably more a collection of incoherent thoughts then anything else. I attempted to complete the McNaughton 200 Mile Trail run and fell short, way short. At mile 100 I dropped knowing I’d be unable to finish. This year the race actually had a 100% DNF rate. 10 of us started, 10 of us did not complete the distance. There was a 72 hour course cut off, when I reached the 100 mile point at 43 hours that left me 29 hours to run the second 100. I’m not capable of running a negative split like that. I took … [Read more...]

200!

I don't look this pretty doing these

Thanks to a short notice for a PT Test with the Army I suddenly have to increase my skill at push ups instead of a slow gradual progression I was hoping for. 17 days notice instead of a few months before my next one. Granted I can ALWAYS pass a PT test, I wanted to destroy my next one. I worked out with my coaches (or they told me and I said sure) a crash training program. 14 days of 200 per day, each day getting harder and harder. Once this is over I'll go on a more sensible training program - till then I'm rocking 200 per day! Day 1 200 push-ups as 20 sets of 10 reps. You can split these any way you wish e.g. 20 x 10 with a short rest … [Read more...]

Brooks Ghost4 GTX

DSCN0132

I’ve been looking for a pair of trail shoes specifically for the McNaughton 200 mile trail run in 2012. During the McNaughton 150 thanks to wet trails my feet became water logged. On the second day of running the bottom of my feet were so sore and tender it hurt to put any weight on them, especially running.  I decided to try a pair of Gore-Tex trail shoes to see if water proof shoes are the way to go. Enter the Brooks Ghost4 GTX.  After a few months of running in these and lots of testing on the trail in dry and wet conditions here’s what I’ve found.  First though, some data about the shoes Specs: $120 msrp Neutral running … [Read more...]

Dirty Girls

DirtyGirlsFeatured

Gaiters are a great way to keep debris out of your shoes during runs.  The best gaiters I’ve found when it comes to cost, weight and performance are the Dirty Girls.  From a performance stand point these are a no thrills stripped down gaiter.  Other companies use water proof material or have a much more elaborate retention system but that’s at a premium cost. Dirty Girls go for $19 a pair and I’ll put them up against any gaiter out there. Dirty Girls come in just over 60 fun patterns and designs. Just don’t ask for black, she doesn’t make them in that color.  The point of these is to not only keep debris out of your … [Read more...]

Badgerland 24 Hour Track Ultra – 2011

Badgerland

September 3rd 2011 was the 24 Hour Badgerland Track Ultra.  This race takes place on a 400 meter track, log as many miles as you can in 24 hours.  My goal was to run 130 miles before the time elapsed. This was a big goal but one I know I'm capable of achieving.  Well, I fell way short of it. I didn't even run all 24 hours.  This won't be an in-depth recount cause when you run 369 laps around a 400 meter track, they all blur together.  Even had I wrote it right after the race, it still would all blur together.  My official distance is 91.731 miles.   My crew was Brandon and Betsy Barnes.  They both did a great job … [Read more...]

Saucony Kinvara

KinvaraFeature

I recently picked up the Saucony Kinvara and have got enough miles in them it’s time to write about this shoe. First impression is I freakin love this shoe. It rides great and is very comfortable. Specs: • Neutral running show that allows your foot to run uninhibited • Lightweight, flexible • Minimal midsole construction with protection from the pavement • Weight: 7.7oz (LIGHT for a trainer you could absolutely do distance runs in) • MSRP - $90 (listed for $68 at Saucony.com at the time of this writing) The Kinvara has a low heel to toe drop allowing for a much more natural foot strike. This is the design used in the … [Read more...]

Continual Forward Progress

Afghanistan

Laura Sievert wrote an article about me for her blog - "Get Out" on The Local Q. She did a great job and made me seem like more of a stud then I really am. Follow the below link to read more. I've included the first paragraph to get you started. "“Ultra” is the right adjective for Jared Busen in more ways than one. This Class of 2000 Quincy High grad has gone on to become something of a real-life superhero. In 2006, Busen joined the Army, went into Basic Training, and discovered that distance running was his passion. Not satisfied with marathons of 26.2 miles, Busen elected to push onward to Ultra-Marathon distances." Read more … [Read more...]
